The Flow Detect notebook
Listening for a water leak
Why pipe material and background noise affect acoustic checks.
Sound needs interpretation
Water escaping under pressure may produce a sound that travels through pipework or surrounding material. The useful listening point may not be directly over the fault.
The site sets the limits
Traffic, machinery, depth and pipe material can affect what an engineer hears. A quiet result alone does not rule out a leak.
One part of the investigation
Listening findings are considered with routes, system checks and other available evidence before deciding whether access is justified.
Put the information into context
This guide explains common investigation principles. Your property, the available access and the actual test findings determine the right next step. It is not a diagnosis of an unseen system.
