Detection methods
Tracer gas detection
Look for a test-gas signal from suitable isolated pipework.
What this method contributes
Where appropriate, a specialist introduces a suitable tracer gas into an isolated system and checks for its emergence using detection equipment. The pipe arrangement and surrounding materials influence where the signal can appear. Findings are interpreted alongside the route and other evidence.
Understand its limits
Gas may migrate before reaching the surface. The strongest reading is not an automatic instruction to excavate at that exact point.
A useful result needs the right conditions and context. The method is considered alongside the pipe layout, the symptoms and other findings, rather than treated as a guarantee.
Before the visit
Explain known branches, shared connections and accessible isolation points.
From the result to the next step
We explain what the observations support, what remains uncertain and whether further checks or access are appropriate. A hidden pipe still needs physical access for repair; specialist equipment does not remove that practical requirement.
